Getting started in karting is easier than you might think! Whether you’re interested in casual practice days or racing at club events, we’re here to help guide you through the process.

Before getting started, it helps to know:

  • Your age (to determine the correct class)

  • Whether you want to practice socially or race competitively

While Karting Australia offers many different classes, not all classes are available at every club. The information below will help you get started at Gladstone Kart Club.

Step 1: Join Gladstone Kart Club

Before you can get on track, you must become a current member of an affiliated kart club such as Gladstone Kart Club.

How to Join

  • Visit karting.net.au

  • Click “KOMP” in the top right corner or go directly to portal.karting.net.au/octozy/login

  • Log in or create an account

  • Go to “Applications” and create a new application

  • Select “Club Memberships”

  • Choose Queensland and Gladstone Kart Club

  • Follow the prompts to complete your membership application and payment

Step 2A: Cadet & Junior Drivers (6–15 Years)

Apply for a Practice (E) Licence

Cadet and Junior drivers must first apply for a Practice (E) Licence before progressing to racing.

How to Apply

  • Log in to your KOMP account

  • Select “Applications” and “Create a New Application”

  • Choose “Annual Driver’s Recreational Licence”

  • Follow the prompts and upload any required documents

  • Complete payment

This licence allows participation in non-competitive practice and social karting activities under supervision.

Important

Cadet and Junior drivers must complete 8 Social Karting Activities supervised by a Karting Activity Controller (KAC) before upgrading to a D Provisional Competition Licence.

Step 2B: Senior Drivers (15+ Years)

Apply for a D Provisional Competition Licence

Senior drivers aged 15 years and over can apply directly for a D Provisional Competition Licence.

How to Apply

  • Log in to KOMP

  • Select “Applications” and “Create a New Application”

  • Choose “Annual Driver’s Competition Licence”

  • Follow the prompts and upload any required documents

  • Submit your application and payment

Step 3: Complete an Observed Driving Session (ODS)

All new Competition Licence holders must complete an Observed Driving Session (ODS) before entering their first race meeting.

This session ensures drivers understand race procedures and can operate safely on track.

How to Enter

  • Select your event

  • Choose your class, kart number and transponder

  • Request an endorsement during entry

  • Accept the Supplementary Regulations and complete payment

Step 5: Complete 4 Approved Race Meetings

Drivers on a D Provisional Licence must complete 4 approved race meetings before upgrading to a full Competition Licence.

Important

  • Request an endorsement each time you enter an event

  • Officials will monitor and approve your participation

  • Track your progress through your KOMP profile

  • A “P Plate” must be displayed on your kart until your licence upgrade is approved

Step 6: Upgrade to a Full Competition Licence

Once you have completed your 4 endorsed race meetings:

  • Log in to KOMP

  • Go to “Licences” > “Upgrade Licence”

  • Submit your request to upgrade from your D Provisional Licence

Remember: You must continue displaying your “P Plate” until your upgrade has been approved.

The club may also know of second-hand karts and equipment available locally.

Before Your First Race

Before entering your first race meeting, we strongly recommend spending time at practice days to become comfortable with your kart, the track and basic race procedures.

Once you are driving consistently and safely at race pace, you’ll need to complete an Observed Driving Session (ODS) before being approved to race.

ODS sessions are generally conducted on practice days before race meetings or by arrangement with the club.

Cadet Driver Requirements

Cadet drivers must complete 8 supervised practice sessions before undertaking their ODS.

Practice must be supervised by:

  • A parent/guardian with a Participant’s Licence, or

  • A licensed adult driver/trainer over 18 years old

These sessions must be recorded in a New Cadet Driver Practice Log.

What Happens During an ODS?

The ODS is designed to ensure drivers understand basic race procedures and can operate safely on track.

During the session, drivers will:

  • Learn basic race meeting procedures

  • Complete a track walk

  • Learn racing flags and safety rules

  • Be observed driving on track

Transponders

All race karts require a transponder for lap timing and race scoring.
